Can anyone tell me if it is hard to build your own tank? If not, and if you have done it, anything you would recomend if I do it...(to make it easier ect..)
I am looking into this so I can have dimensions to fit my needs...

It's cool!!!!!!! It's good to see younger people involved in the hobby.....I wish I would have started earlier, but dang........
I'm broke, now who know's where'd I'd be now though.......

Your going to find glass would be cheaper than acrylic, and both can be a DIY project......I've never built glass, but have acrylic.....Acrylic is going to be more expensive, but there are advantages and disadvantages to both materials.
I would advise that if you frequent the big saltwater site; forum to check out the DIY forum, and to join the site. There is an acrylic fab thread that is huge that would be really beneficial IMHO.....The thread starter James from Envision Acrylics, is the "king".....IMHO he's probably the top acrylic tank builder around, but there are others as well, and he would be more than happy to answer all your questions in detail, and give you some good tips. I almost forgot that he has done a thread showing the basics for building an acrylic tank. PM and I could pass the info along to you if you'd like.....HTH

Building the tank is not "hard", it just takes time and patients. I personally HATE acrylic display tanks. They scratch very easily. No matter what you do, they will fade away. On the other hand, if you have never cut glass, you will have to have someone cut it for you. If you keep it under 18" tall, I can say that you will be fine with 1/4" glass, which goes for about $5.50 a square foot here in Indy at any local glass shop. Pros and Cons
Glass Pros
-Easy Cleaning
-Durability
Cons
-Heavy
-Difficult to drill and Cut if not experienced
Acrylic Pros
-Easy to work with
-Light weight
Cons
-Scratches easily
-Hard to keep clean

I have no problems at all with 14 year olds by any means to start off with ( I coach 9,10,11 year olds at hockey) but he is just saying it because typically at a young age, you usually have not had much time to work with acrylic or glass or building very, very large tanks. . . .

When you say builder, what type of builder are you referring to?

You probably know this but there are companies that will custom build aquariums to any size that you want. However it can get expensive to go that route.

That is why I'm going to attempt to make one. Though I feel that some people do not think it is a good idea.

You go regina!
Some people just dont get it! There is a site that tells you "about" stuff.Go there, they have a aquarium build guide with glass thickness table etc. Get the dimensions you want and find the thickness. Go to a glas shop and have them cut it for you. It wont cost much to go this route. You and you'r dad will do fine and have a good time doing it. I'll be glad to help you through the process. Are you going to drill it for a sump/fuge? Reason I ask is the glass shop will drill it for you and you can also build your own glass sump/fuge at the same time. I imagine if all goes right you could build both tanks for what you have budgetted.

When I was 3 years old, I took apart my mother's hair dryer. My dad came home from work and saw it in pieces on the floor. He yelled at me, and I put it back together, gave it back to my mother, and she continued using it.
I hear that story all the time because apparently taking apart and reassembling a hair dryer successfully is a remarkable feat for a 3 year old.
When I was your age, I was building anything I could out of anything I could get my hands on, so you're talking to someone who doesn't see age as anything but a number when it comes to building abilities.
That said, just be advised that building a tank is a big undertaking, especially if it's your first (I don't know if it is or not) DIY project. People on this board will tell you that I can build just about anything, but I will tell you that I don't build tanks, and it's simply because the stakes are very high. You're dealing with lots of expensive materials, and a LOT of property damage since a potential mistake is more likely to happen wihen you DIY.
So I'm not saying don't try... just saying be aware of what you're getting yourself into if you do try.
Does your $400 budget include the tank only or is it for the entire system? $400 should get you a tank in the size mentioned, but it will not buy an entire setup.
By the way, Perfecto makes a tank in those exact dimensions... 60x24x18 (don't do 12", the lack of front to back space will make aquascaping a nightmare). PetSmart sells it under their Top-Fin line for about $320.
