Fish Vanished

Hi all,
I had a Bangaii Cardinal for "breaking in" my tank, I was not sure if the fish was doing so well, so was expecting it to die, however after four days, I came to look in the tank and there was no fish! he had completely vanished, I removed all rocks, and disturbed all the sand still no fish, I have checked around the tank (even did a CSI investigation and tried to see how far the thing could flip!)
Any ideas?
also...
I have just bought a fuzzy dwarf, but since the start of the tak have not been able to test for Ammonia, the tank has been set up for one month, has polyps growing and algae has gone, Nitrates were highish, but now near zero, the FD was breathing very heavily when first put into the tank, but has calmed alot - 4 hours, I will only be able to get ammonia test kit on Friday, does anyone know what I should be looking for if the ammonia is to high?

Did you have the Bangai in the tank with the lion?? I would definitely test for ammonia ASAP. Ammonia is deadly to fish, and any trace of it could severely harm a fish you put in the tank. Also, if you never have tested for ammonia, how did you know your cycle was through and the tank was safe to put fish into it? Heavy breathing from a fish could mean that there is some ammonia in the tank.

I did not know that the ammonia was down - I took my guess from the fact of my nitrates and nitrites spiking then dropping.
Cardinal was in by itself, replaced it with my fd
FD (Charlie) has now found himself a place to hide under a ledge of live rock, the problem with these fish for me, is that everything that they do is different, Lol.
His breathing is about one breath every one and a half secs.
I know I am stupid to put the fish in without checking for amm, but I needed a fish and I have no patience what so ever! the other fish was last week, it was around for 4 days, so judging from my FW experience if the amm was very high the fish would not have lasted that long??

Here's a lesson for you dude....don't EVER put a fish into a cycling tank until you TEST it for ammonia. Sorry to be so harsh, but in this hobby you MUST have patience.

Agreed. Please start researching before wasting your money and KILLING fish needlessly. Dont listen to your LFS. They just want to make a sale.
For the fishes sake.....

Chill out, u ARE being harsh. It certainly sounds like it atleast. Hes a new guy, so we need to help him, not chew him out. BUD, wat you will need to do is probably bring that lion back (they dont tolerate poor water) get a test (o, and have the lfs watch it) make sure everything is "hunkydory", then bring the lil guy back. BTW, lions do act kinda funny, so dont be surprised. And the dwarf will only eat live food. The bangaii mightve been eatn by another animal in yer house, if u have cats. Best of luck to you, and from now on, confer to this site, and we will be glad to help, not flame on u for making an honest mistake. Guys, he was probably told by the store that he could use a bangaii, it want his fault.
