will a tang and a 6 line wrasse get along ok in a 30 gal setup

what kind of tang?...usually tangs need a larger tank to actually do well. i would worry more about tank size than i would about compatibility between your sixline and tang. but, to answer your question, i think they would be fine together. hope this helps

probably a yellow tang. I am also open to buttefly fish also. My daughter is picking this fish out as a reward for helping me with the aquarium. She will want somethig that moves a lot and is vibrant in color.

be wary of butterflies as they like to eat coral polyps and sponges...of course, that wouldn't be a problem in a fish-only tank. 30 gallons, IMO, is WAY too small for a yellow tang (if fed well, they get big--quick!). HTH....

could you make a few suggestions for me?

bright fish, firefish, or if you want biger, doral beauty or flame angel, but (most)butterflies and tangs should have bigger tanks(at least twice as big)
tangs should have a 75 plus gallon, and most butterflies(that i can think of) neeed a 55 gallon

also, clowns and damsels adapt well to smaller tanks. firefish are really cool, especially the purple ones. of chromis are also cool and relatively easy to keep. is this going to be a reeftank or a fish only tank?

It is a reef type tank. I do have a pecula clown. It is nice to see how he interacts with the wrasse

You might think about a royal dottyback or a bicolor psuedochromis, they have lots of color and stay small. They won't pick at coral and they're pretty hardy also.
