After reading about how much you all love tour TANGS,I went to get one today. My lfs has had a tank full of 3-4 inch tangs, they all looked good, but one in the next tank kept swimming back and forth, looking at me. He is much bigger 5or6in. and has been there at least two months. well to makea long story not quite so long,he is swimming in my 40 now. HOW COOL, He acts as if he's been here for ever.Perfect match. Do I need to make a larger cave for him,or do you think he'll find a spot in one of the other numerous caves I already have? I'm glad I read your posts and replies, STEVE

What kind of tang? Yellow, I'm asssuming, anyway I found my tang by picking out the fish that liked ME the best, instead of the usual picking out the one YOU like the best. Tango seemed too cool a fish to leave the store without buying, so I know the feeling!
And tango makes do with the limited decorations I have now, but I think he'll like a bigger set-up w/ LR as soon as I have any time whatsoever to set it up. So I think unless you want to you don't need more decorations. GREAT CHOICE!

Yep,he's a yellow.I can't remember where lfs guy said he is from. gut he's a perfect, spotless fish. When I feed him do I put a whole peice(2x6in)of seaweed, or cut it down. No other veggie fish in tank. How often do I feed him? he is kinda big. STEVE

Can a purple be put with a yellow? lfs has a smaller purple that I almost got. The yellow was more in my budget. STEVE

Hi,
depends on the size of your tank and the size of the fish, but basically the answer is yes. I would suggest 90g or larger for a yellow and purple, but provided they are a similar size or they are put in at the same time they will be fine, provided the tank is large enough.

My tang dosn't like nori seaweed, so I give romaine and spinnach. Note: Purples and yellows are the same fish, genus and everything except for color, and I belive purples can get a bit bigger in captivity. This means they CANNOT be mixed in less than a 100 gal tank. Check out http://www.magmacom.com/~surf/
for all kinds of info on purple tangs.

Strange. I never heard that before about Purples. I never seen a Purple one get as big as a Yellow. I know Yellows grow faster dispite being of the same genus. For food Julian Sprung's Sea Vegies are really good. They are whole plants that are dried and vitamine enriched.

Its funny cuz some people say you can keep 3 tangs in 1 tank as a shoal and others say 6..
3 in my 80 gallon are fine =)

BiColorGod is right that you can keep 3 tangs of the same sp. together in a fairly large (ex the 80 gallon) tank because their schooling instincts tanke over. But if the only two tangs in the tank were one purple and one yellow, there is a good chance that their territorial instincts will take over. since mr. salty apparently wants another tang, I would suggest getting one other tang that is not of the zebrasoma genus (that of his yellow tang) or if he has a big tank, he could get two more yellows. Good luck with all your tangs!

I do also want a powder blue, beautiful fish. But my tank is a bit small(40gal). That may not be a problem for long. This weekend it started LEAKING. Time to upgrade, sooner than I had hoped for. THAT SOUNDS LIKE A NEW POST. STEVE

I have two tanks (30 and 90) and two yellow tangs. Marilyn, in the 30 gal is shy, and hides when a stranger comes into the room. Mae, in the 90 gal., actually lets me rub her body. HONEST!! When I first got her, she was sickly with ich and "stuff", and was letting the cleaner shrimp clean her until I had to remove the shrimp because my Picasso Trigger started noticing her. So, since then she has been hanging with the Picasso, wanting him to clean her. Scares me to death, but now they are great buds and hang out together. So, Mae has resorted to me to rub her even though she is healthy and well now. I also have a wonderful Naso in with Mae, and they do fine. Enjoy your fish!!

Not to be pessimistic amongst all these tang-lovers but tangs are not the easist fish to keep. With the size yellow you have, I'd suggest you limit putting much of anything else in there, especially another tang.
Also, as to finding him a bigger hidding spot...go for it if you think your fish will prefer that. Tangs are somewhat hyper and skiddish, thus a good place to hide and peak out at you from a safe vantage point will be much appreciated.
Also, tangs are suspectable to HLLE thus address vitimin A and C needs of this fish.

Beth you are excatly right especialy about the hiding spaces and the vitamins. I use vita-chem multi-vitamins and ever since I started my tang's small "bites" out of his dorsal fin from a couple aggressive damsels repair themselves perfectly and much quicker than ever before. Also I was assuming the next tang (The powder blue) would come after an upgrade.

Yellow tangs are extremely aggressive. The naso tang I have is a lot bigger than the yellow but he never bothers any of the fish. Naso tangs are very good fish-very nice fish. I have a hippo tang that is really cool looking but he seems to hide a lot. Does anyone have a powder blue tang or have any experience with powder blue tans? I have heard that they are really mean!?

I hear powder blues are good community fish. I'd love to get one. UPDATE ON LEAKY TANK. I stopped the leak, but not very confident in it anymore. Going to look at a 125 with cabnet tonight. Only 200.00, a steal. STEVE

I had a powder blue and it was the most peaceful fish ever. I still have my purple, but when the flame was in there he wouldn't stop picking at my purple and the powder blue would stop the flame and the purple from fighting.
