fixture questions

I would like to ask a question regarding my new fixture.
If the fixture is 9" in length and I want to build a new little Pico, if I make it
9" also will mounting legs fit properly with this fixture or should the tank be a bit bigger than the 9" for the mounting legs to fit??

The reason I ask this is I don't have legs for this fixture yet. My current tank is a 1 gal pico, it measures 6" across. The fixture is 9" across so it hangs over this tank by 3 inches. I don't think legs will work in this instance.
So I was thinking about having a tank made that would be 9" across just like the fixture is and was wanting to know if the tank and fixture are the same width across will the legs work on this or does the tank have to be longer than the fixture??
I hope this makes it clearer to understand what I am asking

Legs would still work, just place legs at the corners of the pico.however 1.5" of fixture is going to be hanging out.(in each side)...
No, the tank and fixture dont have to be the same lengh ..
fixture can be shorter or longer than the tank's lengh & vise versa..Lights should be Just long enough to cover more than half space of tank frame, but not so much that its way longer than the tank's frame, to avoid light being wasted...
You can also build a "V" shaped canopy (measuring 6" at the bottom and 9" at the top) to seat on the pico's frame and house the fixture..you dig?
