i see that the flame angel is reef safe in the fish section of this site but i have heard of them picking at corals. is there truth to this or is it a 50/50 chance of a flame living together with my corals? what are your experiences with this fish in reef environments.
it all depends on the fish. at my lfs, in their display, she put a flame angel in her reef, and it would pick at all the corals she had. my friend added a flame angel to his reef, and it never picked at anything.

Its actually taking chunks out. The polyps is eaten and some of the base around the polyp. I actually see strings of stuff coming out. Fortunately, that polyp usually grows back as 3-4 new smaller polyps.
Ill be seeing if the LFS will take him back. I wonder if its because I got a large flame angel that makes the difference.
Maybe its the size of the flame angel that matters? If its big when you buy it it will peck at corals and if its small when you buy it it wont pick at corals? Is this true or its a 50/50 with all sizes?

Thats my question, but if I return mine, I dont think Id be willing to risk it by getting a small flame angel. Maybe try a pygmy angel, or just forget angels altogether.
