i keep getting completely opposite opinions on whether flame and other dwarf angels are reef safe. swf.com says they are reef safe, but i've heard otherwise. what's everyone else's opinion on this?

Mine has done wonderfully so far. We will see. As they grow, a formerly friendly fish, can begin to eat corals, so watch them.

You pays your money and you takes your chances. They will be the ones to determine if they want to eat your coral or not. And unfortunately you can't ask them before hand what their pleasure is. Too bad because I think they are beautiful fish.

its really 50/50. but i think certain angels r more prone to nipping and eating corals. most angeels wont eat softies like leathers tho bc of their taste. flame angel is definitely one of the most likly angel to nip at corals and inverts. i think the least likely ones to bother corals r from the argi family, such as the cherub.

My daughter's dating a lad from Northern Jersey. Is he connected?
...same question! (Just Kidding!)
Angels, dwarf angels and Butterflys...they're all potential reef eaters. I've got a Copperband I'd had in my reef for a year before he started nibbling on my Scolymia and Cynaria!
Think of it as Russian Roulette!

I have a friend that has a Flame & a Coral Beauty together in a reef tank for years, & ALAIK, he hasn't had any problem with them...
But, who knows.... like the otherone said.... it's a roulette...

they are said to be reef safe. it should be fine, they are very pretty fish, def worth taking the chance. Worse case senario you can always sell him if its looking bad, people will jump on a flame angle for sale. Now on the other hand i was going to buy a Voltion Lion today ahhaha, but he wasnt even worth taking a chance cause i saw him just trying to take down everybody hahah

Dwarf angels being reef safe rearlly comes down to the individual. I thought my Coral Beauty as a keeper, but I caught him knocking out a colony of yellow polyps in a week or two.

Not to change the subject, but if you want an angel have you considered a Genichanthus? Far less likely (if ever) to bother corals and other inverts.

i'll probably go for it. i had one in my fowlr tank a few years ago and it was probably my favorite fish. from what i'm hearing, it sounds like they would probably just nip at corals, if that, and not like completely eat them or anything. is this correct?

i'm gonna get one, but i'm nervous on what to do if it does nip at the corals. i only have 1 tank, so the only option is to take it to the lfs, which i've had some very bad experiences with and don't trust.

if you look at mine from far, it may look like he is niping at the coral, but when you look from close, he is only picking the algae that grows at the base, I've had mine for an few months now without a coral problem, he did developed curiousity about my feather duster's feather and kept coming back until the FD gave up released the crown and was never seen again....
good luck

I was told that the flame angel was reef safe. Well, The one I bought loves me because he/she are eating every coral that they can possible touch. It has wiped out my clams, scallops and other corals. He had to go to save my tank or what was left of it. Not worth the risk if you ask my opinion
