They require massive amounts of phytoplankton. They prefer to be at the back of a cave where it's dark in murky water loaded with phyto.

I think i would add one more thing . save your money

I have realtivly good luck with my flame scallops. I have 3 of them. Ive had two for about 6 months and one for over a year now. I just put them on the sand in the middle of my tank, and they put themselves where ever they want. Dont move them once they are in place though. Also I feed my tank phyto every other day, and I think it helps a lot.

I had some, lived for about 6 months. (6 months seems to be about the max in an at home tank.)
I put DT Live plankton in for them. Teaspoon a day. 6Gal Tank.

Yes, it typically takes 6 - 12 months for them to starve depending on the initial health of the specimen. In general if you feed them phyto plankon they will live 6 - 12 months. If you don't feed them phytoplankton they will live 6 - 12 months.
If you keep your water green they would probably live a little longer, perhaps an additional month.
The good news is that they have no brain and are not capable of suffering.
