IME, they need a plankton-rich environment fo feed from. Otherwise the mantle begins to shrink and within a matter of weeks you will have an empty shell.
I'm pretty sure the reason why yours is so active is because it is still looking for a suitable place to call home. They like to be in the shade, away from light.
Whether or not they are 'cool,' that is a personal preference. :)
Good luck with it!

Not a happy looking scallop :nope:
Most of these animals - there are exceptions - but most will die within a year.
Great article online by Rob Toonen. Look up his name and "flame scallop" in a search engine and you will probably find it.
Where ever it decides to go, BTW, you should leave it. DO NOT try and move it...they know where they want to be, even if it is behind your rocks.

well it is not moving, and i tried to close it (read that in another post) and it won't sut. very stiff. I picked it up and it is smelly, but it is a clam and they smell. I just want to know for sure that it is dead so I don't harm the tank?????:notsure:

Nope - dead clams smell. And if the shell is stiff....that is bad. These guys will respond very quickly even to shadows by shutting the shells - at least a bit.
IMO, if it smells and the shells won't close = dead dead dead.

I had one of those once. It had a short life span...
I came home and found my starfish eating it.

My problem with the scallops is that while I'm prepared to feed it with a turkey baster, they tend to find very discreet spots in the rock that are either hard to reach with the baster or impossible to find. I tried two and both eventually died, after playing hide and seek for a few months. I'm not doing those anymore.
