I was going to make my own canopy and attach 4 standard 40watt floresent bulbs. I was going to use 2 10,000 k bulbs and 2 atinic all four would be coralife. would this be ok for a 55 gal? Did anyone else ever use this approach?

no reason why it won't work, would be no differen than having them in a light fixture,
question is what do u want to keep in the tank is it a fish only tank ?

it would work, but if you are going to want to keep corals and othe rinverts you are going to need a lot more light. i would maybe build the DIY canopy, but then look into a Power compact, or Metal halid retro kit, to give you more light!
good luck

Wait I have a 25 gal reef with a 65 compact in combo with a standard floresant. The the compact is supposed to equal 3 1/2 standard bulb. If that is the case then why cant I use 4. that would be even more. I would also be using a reflector.
