flow and power heads?

I have a 36g corner with a 225gph flow filter fish only tank.Im trying to understand how to calculate flow.I also will in time go to reef so any input on brands or size .tried the search but soon got :notsure: .thanks in advance for any help

Take the total amount of GPH from your power heads, filters, etc, and add them up. For instance, if you have a powerhead that does 225 and a filter that does 400 GPH, you would have 625. Then, you would take that total number, and divide it by the gallons of your fish tank.
625/36 = 17.36 turnover per hour
17.36 is how much turnover your tank is getting. You want to shoot for 20 for a reef aquarium. The more flow the better.

I have a Fluval 305 which says filter circulation 185 GPH and Pump output 260 GPH. Which one am I going by? Also does the skimmer count for GPH? I can't find a GPH for the Red Sea Prism skimmer. I also have three AquaClear 20 power heads and I think they are putting out 111 GPH.
