Flow rate question?????

How much does the size of the drain pipe effect the water flow rate? I was going to put a 1" drain my 29g, but since I am only running a refugium, and not a sump underneath I want the water movement to be S-L-O-W, I know I could ball valve it, but I would rather go for a smaller pipe. Thinking of 1/2 inch?

external overflow box?
You could put a 3 in pipe and still only get 1 cup per hour. It all depends on the pump you are using to return the water to the tank from the refugium.

No I'm getting it drilled, thats why I am trying to figure out how mch size matters. costs about 50 bucks for 2 holes @ 1 3/4" but only 15 for 3/4" holes.

Why not go with the bigger? If you decide you want to do a sump down the road you're all set. Like it was stated, the amount through the drain will depend on return pump.
