Flow

I have a 75 gal ( 48x18x20 ) with 90 lbs. of liverock with 260 watts of pc lighting 2x65w 10k daylight and 2x65w actinic03. I have a wet/dry with Gen X 4100 (1085gph) in sump and according to mfr. I am getting 700gph 4' from head. I also have a maxi 900 (235 gph) at opposite corner from return. Iwas going to purchase a 3/4" sea swirl to put on my return until I read the posts, especially Squidd's, and I am now more inclined to build a closed loop as the sea swirl will not give me anymore turnover. I will search again for the "spider looking" cl example I have seen on this forumwith 4 returns. What would be a good pump to use? I was thinking of getting a mag 12 or 18. Am I on the right track? I sure do appreciate this forum and wish I would have discovered it before purchasing some of my equipment. Sorry for the long post.

I just read on an on-line marine fish and equipment vendor"Note: Mag-Drive pumps are not recommended for external use." Is this true?

Been using a Mag externally for years now and have never had a problem. I do know that people have said that they do leak, but as far as me....no problems. I would also say this.....IMO Quiet One pumps are 10x better than the Mag products. I have been running one know for quite awhile and....
1. I dont have to service it as much as the mag.
2. Pumps alot quieter.
3. Cost a hell of a lot less.

Third..
But I'm not "excited" about running submersable designed pumps "external" although you can "get away" with it...

Thanks again and what would you suggest for a quiet external or my local lfs will sell me a 3/4" sea swirl rebuilt by the mfr. for $139?

actually the quiet ones supposedly designed to go either way. The one I used had adapters for both sub and external use. Not sure how much flow you want to get from this system or the head pressure but the 3000 moves quite a bit of water, or even 4000. I think I have the factory specs somewhere. Here is the chart for the 3k

I have a 4000 running submersible and the 3000 going external. Love them both.
