Flower pot coral question

For the last week or so, my flower pot coral has only been opening up part way, or closing before lights out, and just acting a little odd compared to its normal self. I'm a little worried about it. Any ideas as to why it's being funny?

Flower pot coral is not very hardy. They do that just before they close up for good. One day all is well and after few days it just stops opening and slowly dies from starvation. Check your water, maybe something is going on with that. Check your temperatures. I had clownfish kill one of mine trying to host it. So if a critter is bothering it, they will react by not opening as well.

I hope that's not the case :( I feed them 3 times a week, and my water has been testing just fine, and none of the fish ever go anywhere near it. Temp has been normal too, I keep it right around 80.

When I say check your water...first find out what flower pot coral needs to be perfect for it to thrive. Then check that against YOUR test results, it might save the coral because they are picky and want things their way to live. That's the best way to describe what may be happening.
For example:
I lost a pagoda cup because they like cooler temps from what my tank runs at. When I tried to tweak the temp for the pagoda cup the other coral looked like crap. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or in this case the one.

Mine does that too once and a while. They are very finicky about the water. I do have a clown hosting mine and he is pretty hard on the thing, but I have owned mine for about 2 years now and it seems to be growing and doing fine. Mine does have days where it does not come out as much though, but then other days it will be fully extended. Drives my maroon crazy because he wants it out all the time.
I would check your flow more than anything and make sure it has a reason to extend. If it is not getting enough flow then there might not be enough food in the water. Do you have a refugium also? I know that helps me because I do not have to feed coral food much at all.

I don't have a refugium, I've been thinking about adding one, but lack of money and knowledge on the subject is kind of holding me back for now. It's been a little more like normal, but still not fully extended. I normally feed my corals twice a week, alternating between marine snow and phytoplex.I've recently added a koralia 3, and I think it's not terribly impressed with the new flow.

I agree....they can be finicky....I service a couple tanks, and the one tank they are huge, and I swapped out tanks and they didn't like the current flow, and I thought it was almost identical as the old tank, but once I got the flow to their liking they've been fine....They been going strong almost 5 years......

Well, after a little over a week of strangeness out of my flowerpot, it's back to it's normal, fully extended self. I have no explanation for its weirdness, I didn't do anything differently. But, I'm so glad to have it back to normal. It must have been mad about the new powerhead.

Good. Also, if you are feeding marine snow and phytoplex twice a week then keep an eye on your nitrates also. Not sure how big your tank is or if you have a powerful skimmer, but flowerpots are very sensitive to the nitrates also. A refugium will give you a buffer when you feed corals in the tank because it will take in the excess nutrients.
