Fluval 305

Hi

Me and my partner have recently aquired a 350L full set up marine tank. I absolutely love it but want to take extra extra care to care for my fishes correctly as we are complete beginners. We aquired them in an established tank with very good quality water so at the moment they are happy as larry!! the move went very smoothly and they seemed to have settled into their new home brilliantly!
We have a fluval 305 filter and i am finding it difficult to find any guides on line on how to clean them properly and how often - anyone have any tips? i'd really appreciate it - can't wait to get stuck in!!!!

Welcome!!!!!
I've worked with the Fluval filters in the past, but had a regular routine maintenance schedule, so never really paid to much attention to what they recommend. The First stage you'll see when opening it is going to be the sponges and they should be serviced on a very regular basis. I say this because they trap the large debris(junk) and your water quality will suffer by constantly letting the water run through decaying matter. They should last a while, but it is recommended to change them out between 3-6 months.....
2nd stage is going to be what they call the sediment which is going to be your carbon. Carbon is exhausted rather quickly depending on tank, but should be changed out min. monthly IMHO. They do recommend either using their carbon or another brand, don't recall the name off the top of my head.
3rd stage is the biological which should last for years......From time to time you can rinse them if you see stuff building up on them, but if you do rinse them I would use old tank water that you drain from the tank to rinse them, but never in the tank, or you could use RO/DI water to rinse them. Check this link out:

But acrylic basically did the same thing I am doing on a monthly schedule. I clean the big sponges and then I have three baskets. One basket has filter pads, the next one has bio pellets and the third has purigen. I have taken my hoses off once to give them a good cleaning. I had to buy special brushes that were long enough for that and I was surprised to see how much junk came out.

Thanks very very much for that!!
That is exactly the sort of thing i needed to know, thanks for the detail - that answers the questions that have been spinning around in my head!!! I'm so excited about getting a tank - my partner and i have been thinking about it for a while so i want to make sure that we are treating it properly from the start!!!

Welcome to the site!
I have a 90g tank...350L
One 305 Fluval is not enough, that canister is for a 70g tank...I use two canisters.
