There is a good deal at my LFS for a 100g Marineland Magnum Canister for $100 and there's a Fluval 404 (100g) canister at the same place for $125.00.
What am I better off with? I only have soft corals.
thanks

What setup do you have going now?(tank/lights/filtters/exe)
Adding a filtter you do not need will not help your tank as a filter you do need will. Knowing what you have will tell us what you need to add if you need to add it.

I run the fluval canister on my 33g and it works really well. I've never used Marineland Magnum Canister so I don't know the pros and cons. What ever you decide to go with just remember to do routine cleanings I clean every other week when I do a water change use the old SW to clean foams and peices. Like aqua guy said A good amount of LR and a quality skimmer is must have but the canister works good for keeping media like carbon and phosphate remover ect and to pick up junk floating around. I just started running a HOB refugium might be something else you might want to look into if your not going to run a drilled tank.

I have been told that marineland is no longer making the magnum canisters. If that is true you may have a hard time finding replacement parts, if you need them. again that is what i have been told.

(I have two canisters and none of the two you mentioned) Mine are Cascade, which I highly recommend, and I have had fluval...the top is a bugger to get off and on.
Someone on this site had a problem with servicing the Marineland...concerning a shut off valve and unclear instructions.
Here is a Check list for the best canister:
  • How easy is it to remove the top to service? Some canisters are a real pain to break the seal after being under pressure.
  • How many chambers does it have for media?
  • Does it have an emergency shut off valve?
Can you service the canister without removing the hoses, keeping them attached?
    Get one larger than needed.
If it is not easy to service, you won't want to mess with it and get lazy about upkeep...BELIEVE me.
