Has anyone on here turned the fluval edge into salt water yet? It looks amazing and I have seen it at my LFS with salt.....

There are a few threads on here that talk about people changing out the lighting and filter. It actually seems pretty easy.
I have seen a few images of these tanks and they look fabulous. I just wish that they made a 24 gallon or so... The largest they have is something like a 16 gallon... Just wish there was a bigger one is all.
Either way, We plan to put one of these in the waiting area of our office space once we get it all set up. We think it'll be a really nice addition for people waiting to have meetings. And it'll also look really neat since it sort of "cantilevers".

I have searched here and seen it a few times, but I have also googled it.
Fluval says that this tank is "reef ready" or salt ready atleast but it's not. There are a few minor things that really need to be done in order for it to be a successful saltwater environment.
1- change the filter. The edge comes stock with an aquaclear 10 I believe? You can replace that with an aquaclear 20 which has better flow and better filtration. This is a simple mod and it's pretty cheap... about 20-30 bucks.
2-the lighting. It is sucky lighting... It's not good for corals, coraline algae, and it's not even good for freshwater plants. That mod however is not so simple but it can be done. I have researched it... seems like it can be done really well for around 150 bucks, and it still looks nice. Other people just say to plop a different fixture on top but it simply ruins the effect of the whole "rimless" and no brace look. Why spend the money on the tank if you're gonna ruin it.
lemme see if I can find you some build links.

This is a good write up about it, and similiar to what I have seen.
I was thinking though... since there are some problems with this tank that make is sort of hard for a saltwater tank... What if you just made your own egde tank?
I see so many people taking the braces off their tanks, and really, how is it different from this? If you know what you're doing, you could make this, and make it bigger (which is better) like maybe a 20 gallon or a 24 or something.... I don't know. It's just my thoughts.
