Fluval Question

When you change out media or clean the foam bricks in your fluval, do you empty the water from the canister and clean the entire unit? I was trying to figure out where some small like debris was coming from. I took the polyester fill out of my sump and then opened the fluval canister. I cleaned the foam blocks but when I turned the unit back on, it spat out a bunch of white junk. So I am wondering if I am supposed to clean the entire canister every now and then.

I'm new to my fluval canister. From everything I have been reading, I still have not found out an answer.
When im doing a water change/cleaning my canister i do empty the water in the canister, clean the foam, and put some of my new saltwater in the canister. I havnt had any problems yet! Hopefully it stays that way. I was also looking to find the answer to this myself
