Fluval Spec 2 Gallon Build Thread!

After coming across the Fluval Spec for $42 it was hard to pass up. Finally received it from UPS last night, well, this is what it looked like.

So, I called wag.com and told them the situation, they were very understanding about it and had a very quick response. As soon as I called they put in a replacement order that will get here tomorrow, AND UPS is picking up the damaged tank and sending it back, none of this cost me any extra so its kinda hard to have any bad feelings about it. Will just have to wait to get this tank going till tomorrow!

What do you plan to put in it?
I saw a little pico somewhere, don't remember where, I don't think it was here, where the guy had a piece of "yuck" LR with bubble algae, aptasia, all grades of "undesirable" stuff on it, along with some Xenia and some mushrooms I think.
It was surprisingly beautiful.

I am pretty sure I am going to do some soft corals. I will be taking some sand and some live rock from my established 55 gallon. Gonna order the marineland 404 pump to replace the 40gph ump it came with.

what kind of lighting does it have? looks like a pretty cool little tank. i wonder if you could even have a little clown goby in there? atleast a shrimp or something to watch. what exactly are your plans for the tank?

It comes with a LED lighting fixture which is surprisingly bright and should be fine for now, will defiantly be doing a DIY led for Tito replace in the future. I know for sure I am going to be looking into a Pom Pom crab, and possibly a tail spot blenny. Ordered a marineland 404 ump to replace the small 40gph bump it came with. Also considered a nano protien skimmer, any thoughts on that?

very nice, sounds like a good plan. not sure how big the tail spot blenny gets, might be to big for such a small tank? not sure tho. and a skimmer wont hurt of course. might be kind of difficult to find a place for it tho. i think as long as you do a small water change every week it wouldnt really be needed.

Well got the tank in, got it running as well, so far it looks good. I have 3 pictures that I will add here soon, I am on an iPad and not sure how to use this thing fully. I did the surface skimming thing by using a piece of acrylic to block about 60% of the overflow, not sure if I did it correctly because it seems like its not flowing very fast over the top of it? Like I am pretty sure that if I put the marineland 404 pump in it would pump the water drone the overflow out faster than it would be filled. I also have removed the crappy filter sponge that came with and replaced it with some filter fiber. Will continue with the updates!

Just a little update, tank is doing great, no algae problems of any kind. Added a tiny clown gobby who will not eat, afraid for the little guy, he was pretty skinny when I got him and if he doesn't eat I'm afraid he is gonna starve. I also added 2 nassarius snails as well and both seem to be enjoying themselves. I do have some pictures, but I can't add them from the iPad.

Clown gobby is still alive, but have yet to see him eat. Inside of the tank needs a little cleaning too but still gotta get a nano magnet for it. No algae blooms yet. Here are the pictures of how I have it set up:

New development, there is a small leak coming from the bottom of the front right corner. When I say small, I mean very small, at first I thought it was from water dripping off the lid, as you can see in the picture it builds up on the inside of the lid, but I took it off last night and waited to see. Woke up this morning with water all over the base of the tank. Trying to do a quick patch with some silicone and coral glue (yes, coral glue). I hope the coral glue works since it is thinner than the silicone and will seep through the base much easier. Wont be as much of an eyesore either. If this doesn't work I may have to take the tank and empty it out, and put the tiny clown gobby in the 55 gallon where he is sure to get bullied by my Koran Angel. Heck, the Koran Angel could probably eat him if it so desired to.

Yea, this tank has been a PITA lol. But I am pretty sure I have the leak sealed now. Clown gobby still hasn't eaten yet, he is looking extremely thin, pretty sure that if he doesn't eat in the next day or two he won't make it.

Well, another update. The clown gobby is blind. I feed him nightly before I shut off the light and watching him tonight there was food inches away from him and he never went for it, but, when a piece would float RIGHT in front of him he seemed to take notice but couldn't follow it. I grabbed a dropper and put a piece in and put the dropper end literally on his nose and pushed the food out, he ate it whole. This went on for several minutes til he wasn't interested anymore. Not sure what to do about this little guy.

Tank continued to leak, took it down and I am getting a replacement. If this doesn't work out then I will be getting my money back... The tank was great, have had no issues with it other than finding a good temperature for it, the thermometer didn't keep it at what it was set at thats for sure. Pretty certain the tank was near 86 today. here is hoping that this tank is in working order...
