You, see... typical of this board.
Someone posts their knowledge of using foam under tanks and they get trashed by someone else. Funny thing is the only thing I was wrong about was that your GC tank has trim on it. My mistake was bashing GC when apparently you own one.
It's okay, everyone will look at your high post count and think you are the more knowledgeable person here. So be it. I stopped posting here long ago because of people like you.
Awful funny you call yourself acrylic51 but yet you own a GLASS tank?
Before you ask here is my 280 ACRYLIC in the works.

I have to dissagree...Acrylic has always been very helpfull!!!
He is offering his opinion/defending in what he believes in.
If someone said something negative about aga I would do the same, all my tanks have been aga and i have never had 1 issue with them, so i would offer my opinion about aga and defend aga if need be.

cant we all just get along? I think everybodies views are important. especially if they conlfict there is not much accomplished by getting pissy with each other. expiriences differ from person to person. some people swwear by one brand and hate another. you both have beautiful construction projects under way. I am going to try and watch both of them progress. my tanks are all AG but thats just because its the most common type around here and I dont like perfecto. but thats just me. I used to maintain a 500 g acrylic tank and was discouraged by the poor access to the top and how easily the viewing "glass" got scuffed. but I know for a fact that coraline algae grows faster on acrylic than glass. (i did several expiriments relating to background color and tank material.) if any one wants to hear the results just send me an e-mail at
bass.assassin@adelphia.net
for some reason the site says I dont want to recieve e-mails and I dont know how to change it.

I've seen many experienced aquarist use foam sheets for this and it works for both acrylic and glass and imo I wouldn't go with a company that says you have to use it or it voids the warranty or vise versa because thats just a damn loophole but as far as using THIER stand for THIER tank that is totally understandable
and acrylic51 from my experience is a good knowledgable person

i was always taught that foam was to make the tank level even if the stand is a little off. The tank levels out because it puts more weight where it would normally be unlevel... is that not right?
and i think this has gotten way out of hand. Someone posts their opinion and cause it is different, someone else has to get all high and mighty cause they know better. i thought difference of opinions was what this site is about... gathering all sorts of information from different people with different experiences. I think that there was a much more civil way to go about the disagreement between these two parties... BTW, i'm not trying to bash here at all, so please don't take it that way, but this isn't the first time i've seen acrylic react to someone's misinformation that way. I understand where he's coming from, but simply saying "i disagree" is much more appropriate and effective than "wrong!!!!!!!" I was referred to this website by one of my good friends, and this isn't one of the great things i was told about... interesting how they leave this kinda thing out of the "you should check out this website, it's amazing", huh? :notsure:

I do not think that the use of foam under any tank is going to solve the issue of a tank not being level. If the tank sits 1/4" higher on one end than the other end a foam board will not correct that. The foam I feel is to compensate for the aquarium resting surface on the stand not being flat. Getting the stand top surface perfectly flat would be next to impossible using wood and normal cabinet and construction methods. Keeping in mind that even if the stand is made perfectly flat the floor and its supports will not be. IF all is level and flat the addtion of the water, rocks etc will cause all to settle to a point. The foam will compensate to some point for a non-flat surface. The foam will have more weight bearing on the high points causing it to compress and thus spread the weight over a larger area. I used a double layer of the closed cell foam tape that you put under truck caps when you install the cap to the truck. This tape has adhesive on one side to keep the tape from shifting when you set the tank on the stand, is made to resist water and comes in rolls. This can be bought at discount stores as well as auto supply stores.

Well BigB you have the right to your opinions and they maybe valid, hence a message board.
I have been in this hobby a long time and you'd be hard pressed to find some one as knowledgably like acrylic and a very few other members that can teach and prove helpful techniques in this hobby.
Acrylic in my opinion is not hanging on the message board looking for the lime light and notoriety. Acrylic is just being an excellent example of dedication and hard work and sharing that wealth of knowledge to the misinformed and “sheep” lead down the wrong path.
Your right when it comes to high thread counts, some people think high counts equate to knowledge, again when it comes to certain members it’s almost a guaranteed winning bet that they are right.
I think you jumped the gun on this one.

ahhhh, that makes more sense... see, when i heard someone say "flat" i thought they meant level, but i understand now. Thanks!!!
and i never said i don't like acrylic... he's just kinda brash sometimes, that's all. i don't really know him enough to be able to tell whether or not i like him. He does seem to be very knowledgable, but i'd be more inclined to read his posts if he were a little nicer. JMO
and again, thanks for clearing up the foam thingy!
