How long ago did you get this tang? I cannot pretend that he will be ok in your tank. Please return him to the LFS.

Ok, well the purple could be coralline algae. Just wanted to make sure the rock wasn't some weird mineral.
Where the filter goes is up to you. As with the powerhead. Just make sure you have good flow that keeps detritus from settling

WOW.....Seems to look quite pale there....
Okay, Said my peice
Journey, I am with you on the unnatural food thing..
Please take it back to the LFS, I have made the same mistake in the past..(well...It was in a 55)
The fish will more than likely become very stressed in that tank and lead to an outbreak of ich..I hope not but more than likely it will happen.
If that is the case and the poor fish doesnt make it then the best thing would be to run the tank fallow for about 6 weeks...I know you like the fish and its beautiful, But imagine that it expires and having a tank that you cant put fish in for about 2 months...Just water and rocks..Doesnt sound all that great does it...Once again I am not trying to flame, just trying to help.Everyone has done rookie mistakes...No big deal..

Yes, I agree; does not to healthy at all. The water level should be alot higher like up to the bottom of the trim piece. I would add about 10-20 more lbs. of live rock and ensure the cycle has been complete. Good luck.

thanks guys. taking him back today. Waanted to get pictures up just to hear the replys and it makes it easy. This is a very big tang compared to the ones at my LFS, would it be a bad idea to trade this one for a smaller one? or what kind of fish would you recommend

The confinements in a store are sometimes a bit smaller than your tank, but the realization is that they are not housed there very long. They come in , go out....only a few unwanted fish for whatever reason, stay too long and sucumb to a tradgic end.

Tangs really shouldn't be in a tank smaller than 60 gallons at minimum.
How old is your tank? if you lost clowns you may need to let the tank mature some more before adding livestock. I had to wait 4 months for my 72 gallon chemicals to stablize.
In a 20 gallon, probably need to stick to Cardinals, Firefish, a goby, clowns, etc. This site lists the fishes that are acceptable in a 20 gallon.
