Behold. A 6-inch Disney Nautilus, now at your Hallmark store. It would be pretty easy to gut this, remove anything potentially harmful, and hide it away in the rockwork somewhere.
Or did I just geek myself?

Well, if it's like most Hallmark ornaments, I'm going to guess it's a thick polystyrene plastic and (most likely) enamel paints. Take the batteries and lighting rig out, give it a good coat of clear epoxy to be safe, and you're good to go.

Gut it, install 3 micro servos, a motor, a receiver and a mini cam. Weight for neutral bouyancy and cruise under the rock and see what those peppermint shrimp are really doing.
