For all those who want/do keep a yellow tang in a 55 ...

I really wanted a tang in my 55, love that bright yellow color, but to much needed advise from this board and suprisingly my lfs, I was told NO NO.
Well I bought a yellow angelfish, not a lemonpeel, but a yellow angelfish (Centropyge heraldi) and it is a beautiful!!!
I never really liked the tangs nose/body, but could never get over the color, well I LOVE the look of all dwarf angels and this really brings your tank alive.
Just a quick suggestion for those who want a yellow tang in their 55's.
P.S. - I still havent seen any images online that do these fish justice, so make sure you see them in person before deciding.

Well if you like the color, there are MANY other choices: foxface, yellow damsel, yellow watchman goby, yellow clown goby, canary blenny, some butterflies, dwarf moray, diadema pseudochromis, banana wrasse, yellow wrasse, the dwarf angels, and more which would be suitable for the 55-75g range. So there must be more than merely the color of the fish that makes yellow tangs so tempting.
Just a thought, but I agree, dwarf angels, of all types, are beautiful with a capital B.

That is where the argument lies... my small Purple Tang (same body style) will swim the length of my 7 foot tank... so in reality I'm not sure it is big enough.
How do you know yours has plenty of room?

I've had my Yellow Tang for over 7 months and it's doing great in my 46 bow front. I'm not encouraging this, but it can work for a small tang if you know what your doing. The thing is I have every intention on upgrading my tank pretty soon here. IF your willing to upgrade, it is possible to have a small tang in a 55 gallon with no problem. IF you have no intention on upgrading, then you shouldn't have a tang in a 55!!!! I'm upgrading my reef tank to a 75 or a 110 gallon tank so I hope the Yellow Tang would be nice to my corals. If not, he's gotta go somewhere else.... He's in the bowfront with a trigger for now, they've been tank mates for 6 months, the trigger came a month later. The trigger is a lot smaller of course. He can't move in with my reef so he has to stay there by himself unless I get him another tank mate. Good Luck with whatever you choose! :happyfish

I hope it doesn't grow because when it grows, it will have less space and become more stressed.
Why don't people realize small tanks have limitations as to what they can adequately house?
Why can't people just buy bigger tanks if they want the type of fish for them? I've got an idea. How about living in your smallest coat closet instead of your entire house for a few weeks and see how you like it? This is basically what you are making a tang do - live in a small enclosure when it is in their very nature to need to roam? You would stress and go mental... so why wouldn't a fish?
We all make mistakes in this hobby, but when experts (like Fenner, and even others on this board) even tell us we can't... it is not longer a mistake - just foolishness.
You should house fish so they can thrive in an environment, not merely survive.

Ok here is where i chime in! I had a Lovely Yellow tang in my 60 wide, Almost a year everything was great , then One day she started stressing out! I Noticed that she could no longer get through and around the LR so i changed the layout to allow her to move more freely! It was fine for awhile but she stressed out again and died before i could get her a new home! My entire point is, You can not keep a tang for a long time, (full grown they can reach 8 ") they will outgrow their space very fast, I now intend on upgrading to a much larger tank, Hopfully i can again someday have another yellow tang!
I still miss Daisy!

Is a 90 gallon big enough for a yellow tang. I have no intention of going bigger, so it would have to live it's whole life in there.

What else are you stocking it with? If you have a light bio load, then yes you can have it.
If you have lots of fish in it already, then no you can't. In a 90 gallon, I'd limit the tank to one tang total though unless you get a Kole Tang, and then maybe you could pull off having two in a 90 gallon.
I'd like to see what you already have in the tank before telling you a definite though.

You can but CC is not recommended. It is nitrate heaven.

That is not long enough to tell if it is "happy" or not. IDK if your tank is new or not but tangs need established tanks.
