When caulerpa goes sexual, it basically breaks down and turns clear as it releases spores in the tank. It can't do this every night and still survive. To prevent it from happening you prune it on a regular basis. I would'nt believe what about.com has to say, if this is the info they give out.

It's only a flame if you call me an idiot or something rude. This is a difference of opinions and or facts. Caulerpa basically dies when it goes sexual, the plant sort off breaks down when this happens releasing spores into the tank. Are you sure your not confusing sexual with Ph? During light periods plants use carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, when the lights are out the opposite occurs. Carbon Dioxide can lower your Ph and this is why you run the lights on an alge scrubber opposite of the DT.

yeah I have always heard sexuall means at night the plant emits all of the traits back in the water. Maybe we just misunderstood each other, my wife says I am hardheaded just before she hits me with the frying pan

When caulerpa goes sexual it DOES release the nitrates, it just does'nt do it every night. The plant, as I stated before basically dies when this happens, believe me I've had it happen to me years ago before anyone even knew what going sexual meant. I just assumed the plant was using up all the nutrients needed to survive. When I can back into the hobby I found out people now understood why this happens.
