Forget nets, traps...

If you want to catch those pesky Damsels, go fishing! I spent months trying with a net and trap with no luck. Today I caught the bad boy of my tank in under 10 seconds!

i only condone the use of fishing equipment after all other avenues have been exhausted or if you don't plan on giving him/it away when you've caught it.

Why? The fish is fine. I gave to him my local fish store. It was actually rather humane if you can believe it.

When I first started this hobby I had a 55G reef tank that I bought this cute little 2" lunare wrasse for. Being clueless I had no idea how big he would get. 2 or 3 years later he was one big invert killing machine. This thing would pop a snail shell and actually crack it before dinning on a $.99 cent meal. I Like you, tried EVERYTHING to get this

out. I was so frustrated I was going to take the entire tank down to get him out. I figured, why not, I've already ruined the reef setup the way I had it by moving everything around. Then one day about a six pack deep, pointing at him and complaining to a buddy we decided we would just fish him out.
It literally took 15 seconds to catch him.
I was so happy. At the time I had a pred tank setup so I put him in there and he lived on until I gave him away another couple years later.
Funny part is, about and hour later I see him freaking out swimming all over the tank. Run over there to find him chasing a mantise shrimp I have been beating my head against a wall trying to catch.
In just a few minutes I was able to do what had frustrated me for months! And like every good story it all started with a cold beer and a fishing hook..lol

I got mine with a net but it meant I had to take all my BR out and piss off all the other little guys in my tank! But I did get him after getting wet up to my underarms and soaking the carpet but I did get him. I should have tried to get the bugger with a hook, have a bunch outside and fishing line as well... oh well.
But what if you catch the wrong fish? I have 2 others other than him and I didn't want to hurt them, just capture the butt hole!
Thanks

Who needs fishing rods. Just pull out the 12 gauge. That damsel will be gone in seconds, well the tank too.

I couldn't believe how easy it was. When another fish comes by to eat it I just pulled it up and out of the water. He was the most aggressive eater anyways so I knew he would go after it quickly. I used the smallest hooks I could find at Walmart and put some clam on it. Hooked him right in the mouth. Now I have 3 more little Damsels to get out. I think they got freaked out when they realized the big bully was gone and they all hid for a while. So I will try again tomorrow for another one. Good thing the LFS is only a mile away.
