Well i could make it do that if i design it right. thats not actually my thing i dont even have a tank yet. is skimming the surface very important like is there a lot of film or sumthing on a saltwater setup?

there is film on the water surface also that is where the air and
water exchange takes place.

is the point of a closed loop solely for circulation? i don't really see any other benefits, maybe i'm dumb where that's concerned, but i think a powerhead inside the tank would be more efficient, and certainly easy to work with, not to mention aesthetics.

Well, I think Mag pumps are designed to pump water from sumps to tanks or for other utility jobs. What I like about the closed loop idea is that you do not have to have a huge powerhead (capable of 500-700 gph) in your tank. Also the positioning of the outlet from the closed loop is much more versatile. You can put multiple outlets from the pump and you can position the outlet in a different area in the tank than the inlet.
