I found a pinky/purple gorgonian washed up on the beach today and I was wondering if I should put it in my tank. Well actually if it was okay to put in my tank. I don't want to spread any diseases or parasites to any of my other corals. I am still not sure if it is alive of dead. It was still wet when I found it and it is sittlng in some sea water right now.
Any and all opinions please!
Thanks
Tiff

Chances are that it wouldn't survive in your tank. Not sure what the water temp is where you found it, but it's probably a lot lower than what your tank is. I would put it back in the ocean, if there is a big difference in the water temp.

I'd think you could have a hard time keeping it. Without having information about its requirements chances are it would gradually die...I think I'd either positively ID it and provide proper conditions or put it back where it came from.
If I was to keep it...then I'd probably try it in a seperate system. I sure wouldn't risk putting it directly in my reef.
Hard telling what a wild creature would do to all my captive pets!!

Well, I would put it back, but like I said it washed up, it is a broken piece apparently, if I tossed it back in chances are it would get washed right back up right? Then it would dry up and die I am assuming. I have seen this type at the LFS so maybe they could help me out. We have a reef not to far off of shore (Gray's reef) not sure what the temp is out there. I have a ten gallon with a 3" sand bed, 15# tonga branch/shelf with nothing but a conch and a red leg. If some one could help me out with a temp maybe I can keep it alive.
BTW It has opened three white polyps so far.
Thanks. Tiff
(Please don't be mad at me I thought I was helping it out:( )

Well. I am definitly not going to put it in my main reef, but I will give it a go in the 10 gal.. I can take it back next week, or take it to the Ga. State Uni. Marine extension aquarium if it doesn't seem to do well. I'll see how it does in the 10 gal. for now.

Hey! It's good to know there is somebody local on here!! yeah, I am at E.U. 2-3 times a week, they know me by my first name I 'm afraid. (I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing!! i spend way too much $$ there) I was just there today as a matter of fact. Jerry said he is going to get some pretty cool stuff in tomorrow, things he has never had before! I am excited! It will be good to see some new things in there for a change. Do you go there often? I don't know were else there is to go in savannah, now that the place on Victory is closed.
Any way, too bad about the gorgonian. It has opened a few more polyps in the last couple of hours. I did not check out your specs, but if you ever have anything you want to trade let me know!! I am really glad to find someone close to chat with !
Thanks,
Tiff

It's really cool to put a face with a name! I didn't realize you had a salt water tank! I saw you in E.U. Sunday I think, I was taking a starfish my friend gave me back to them. I wasn't sure you would recognize me , so I didn't speak. Any way, do you really want to work at P.S.? It's a fun job at first but after two years of explaining to stupid people why they shouldn't put 10 goldfish in a bowl, it gets to be a just a little annoying! Other than that it's pretty cool. It would be nice to have someone at work to talk to about salt water. I talk about them all the time but no one really knows anything they just listen!
Well my chemistry lab report is calling, so I must go! Nice talking to you! Thanks for the advice earlier, I will keep you posted on the gorg.

You shouldn't be jealous! The water here is disgusting, it's all brown and yucky. I don't even get in! (I am assuming you are jealous because we live near a beach?) It is pretty cool though becouse every once in a while you can see a few dolphins swimming pretty close to shore. THey look a little like sharks at first so, every body halls butt out of the water, but cool none the less:cool: .

I have picked these up when down in Florida. I currently have five of these in my reef tank. All are doing well and I feed these daily with DT's and the next day Coral Vital. I have had these going on two years. My thought is if thrown back in the ocean they will just wash up and die. At least now these have a home in a safe place. They also like a strong current.
