This is a “Do as I say not as I do” thing; because most of us will have to learn the hard way that you need to QT every addition. There were times when I did not and there were times I have been burned because of it…

I lost about $150 in fish just about 2 months ago to ick. I just bought 2 clownfish and a sunrise dottyback and didn't use a QT. Guess I'll never learn.

What difference does it make if it's FOWLR or Reef? If you have fish in the tank, you should QT.

Yes I QT.
There is more to QTing then just disease concerns. It's a peaceful area new arrivals can adjust to tank life, learn that "we" feed them, etc....

Not yet but I have been actively watching craigslist for one and we are not adding anything else to the tank until we get a QT--too much to risk losing. Why is it several months ago I was seeing them on craigslist all the time, now that my tank is up and I need one, can't find one!!??

you can get a regular 10 gallon tank from wal-mart for 10 bucks, buy a cheap little maxi jet 10 bucks, and a cheap HOB filter 15 bucks. paint the bottom, fill it with water add some PVC tubing or somehting for the fish to hide when it wants and you've got a good QT tank for 35 dollars.

That's eaxctly how I set my QT tank up except for the painting the bottom. The tank sat on a dark surface which close to being the same. I also suggest getting a refractometer which makes getting the correct salinity level easier and in case you ever have to do any hypo.

just a note and i am sure everyone knows this but i will say it anyway make sure you test your water a short time after you introduce new fish into your QT even if its been up and running for a while with minimal inhabitants and have a bottle of Prime on hand

It's simple: If you don't QT you will wipe out your tank! Maybe not this time, but sooner or later, and generally when you have the most expensive stock you ever had. Take it from someone who knows from experience (as do many others on this board).

so you get a QT tank then put new fish in. How long do you keep fish in there and how do you determine it is safe to add fish to tank? It seems to me it would stress the fish even more. that potentially could be 3 or 4 new homes for the fish.

it depends on the type of QT you run and the type of fish you're QT-ing. we normally have QT's up and running 24/7 and these tanx are basically fully set up and cycled w/LR, substrate, and (usually) macro algae. if we know we'll be treating a fish prophylactically, the fish goes into a BB uncycled HT. if we go the HT route, we hang an ammonia alert tag in the tank in addition to daily water testing "just in case".
to minimize stress, you can use fake coral, rock, or even PVC to give the fish some comfort if you run a BB setup.

IMO six weeks
observe your fish for signs of illness
you are in fact providing stress free environment to observe your fish

This is one of the main reasons I can't wait to build our fishroom.... it's going to be heaven on earth.

Word!
Get burned once and you will never fail a QT again.

I would love to be able to do that but a 10 gallon tank would just be too stressful for the size/type of fish that we have. I would like at least a 30 gallon long if I can find one reasonably priced. Just a regular 29 gallon at Walmart is $80. I have a filter but need the tank, top, and heater yet. One will come along, I just need to be patient.
