I can understand fish only, but what is the difference between a fowlr and a reef. They both have live rock and fish don't they? Thanks.

Well, i know i'm new/stupid to all of this, BUT i guess i was under the impression that corals grow off of live rock. I guess not huh. So everything that grows off of live rock is different then corals? Weird, once again...i'm confused more. Thanks for the reply though.

In a Fish only tank you can have live rock and live sand with relatively low lighting conditions. The LR and LS do not need near as much light as corals. Ive heard appx 1-3 Watts per gallon for FOWLR/LS, someone correct me if im wrong. With Reef Tanks you will need substantially more lighting due to the corals. For Reefs ive been told that you need 5-7 or more Watts per gallon.
I myself am about to start a FOWLR/LS and am just using 2 FLO 40W each, im going to save up for lighting and change to a Reef tank probably after christmas.

They are one in the same kind-of.
You have reef fishes in your tank so I guess you could call it a reef tank if you would like. Just don't call it a Coral Reef Tank. :)

FOWLR is a tank with live rock and fish, reef fish or otherwise. It is not considered to be a reef.
A reef tank does have Live Rock, but also will have coral. Yes, .some
Coral does grow on live rock, but in a FOWLR, generally there is rock only without coral. You can have a reef tank WITHOUT any fish, but you cant have a FOWLR without fish. The terminology is used to quickly identify what someone is talking about when in discussion. I know when someone says that they have a FOWLR that they are not really keeping coral, and your main concern is the fish. But if you say you have a reef, then I am assuming that your main concern is the coral - even though you more then likely do have fish also. AM I just rambling here or am i making any sense? :p

actually you can have a few corals in FOWLR tanks depending on your lighting & quality of water & what's in there...some LR you get might already have hitch hikers that might be corlas...they may iether merely make a presence or eventually totally die off...possibly might thrive & spread to rest of LR

Thanks reefkeeper and all other replys. I now can make better sense of this type of stuff and myself understand what people are talking about.
