there could be several problems with the algae....anywhere from old light bulbs, excess nutrients in the water by over feeding or extended photo periods....the brown stuff on the top of the sand are diatoms....and usually appear because of excess siliacates from using tap water....a lot of the times being a new tank the diatoms is just part of the process of aging but can controlled by using ro water and a consistent maintenence schedule....the green on the glass it is just going to be there its part of owning a tank....i clean mine everyday with a magna float....IF it gets thick real fast or is almost uncontrollable then i would check your lighting period and age of the bulbs....
with all that said what kind of lights do you have? how long has the tank been set up?? and what type of inhabitants do you have currently?
