They could be grown in captivity. Frags are simply pieces of larger coral taken off to produce more. For example, lets say you have a rock with mushrooms and you want another one with mushrooms. You could remove one mushroom and place in on another rock and allow it to attach itself to create a frag or fragment of a coral.
I buy almost all my corals as frags. They are generally quite small, but not always. I just bougt an 8" sinularia frag for $45. Frags are generally cheaper I have found. If they are small, they seem to adjust to my tank much better too. Not too mention that you are sort of saving a wild one.
when you are fragging say some sand polyps or something what is actually alive on the coral...just the colored tip? so i could break a piece of hte rock off and place it on a rock and then it will attach itself to it? how long does it take until it attaches itself to the rock?
Sand polyps are the coral. They are not a colored tip. They are jsut attached to a rock. Normally they just spread to the rocks around them. I guess you could break the rock in two if you want two clumps of them?
I am not sure that I would do it with that type of polyp. Usually you just wait for them to start spreading. Most people take cuttings off of leathers, tree corals, etc. Or break pieces off of sps and lps to make frags. I think it would be tough to tear a polyps off of a rock and actually get it to stick on a new rock.
yeah i guess that was a poor example but say with like a mushroom or something...you would just cut a piece of it off....and then eventually it would form into its own mushroom?
No, it will likely float around your tank. You need to attach it with a thread or some kind of glue. Either way, I don't think it is going to work for a sand polyp. I have no idea how long it takes. Maybe a couple of weeks.
