Is it legal to go and get live rock out of the ocean? If not close to shore how far out do I need to be? What should I look for?

From what I have read, it is illegal and carries a hefty fine if you get caught. Don't take the chance, buying LR is a lot cheaaper then the fine.

Even if I go out really far, maybe even the bahamas.

1st, in most areas of the world it is illegal
2d, I would not consider it unless it were really far out
and most of all
3d, it is destructive to our reefs, leave tehm alone, and stay with the aquacultured PLEASE. Our reefs are a terrible thing to waste and soooooooo beautiful(if you ever seen one, you would know what i mean, probably not consider this)

just to add my .02, if protecting the reefs doesn't move you to invest in "legal" product, even if you go to the bahamas, custom's would confiscate it at least, possibly levy a fine if you can't prove it didn't come from florida reefs.

just for the record i wasnt thinking about damaging reefs. I do dive and would never touch a reef. I was thinking strictly rocks on a sand bed. I will go to LFS.
