GO BROWNS] .

Defensive happenings
The Browns announced the signing of Mark Word to a contract extension through the 2004 season. Word is a great insurance policy against Courtney Brown's injured knee. If Brown is not able to return at 100%, Word has proven to be an ample replacement, serving up eight sacks and four forced fumbles last season in 16 games. Throw in Tyrone Rogers, Alvin McKinley, Kennard Lang and an in-shape Gerard Warren and the front four should be one of the team's biggest strengths in 2003. Barring injury, of course.
Linebacker available
Tennessee cut Randall Godfrey today. Godfrey was second-team All-Pro in 2000 and began his career with Dallas. Do you think current Browns defensive coordinator Dave Campo will push for a meeting with his former middle linebacker? Interesting. The only red flag with Godfrey is his health. He missed much of last season with an injured ankle. The last thing the Browns need is to throw a hobbled veteran in there with a mix of hungry, quick and healthy young linebackers. All the talk on defense after last week's minicamp was of how improved and speedy the young linebackers have become. My guess is that Davis will pass on adding Godfrey and concentrate on developing the talent he has.
