My lfs is getting a 800 pound order of rock next week. It is comming strait from collection in the ocean. Is this a good idea to start my tank with. Would it smell really bad or take a long time to cycle?

I would think that it would be fine for the cycle...as good as any other kind of LR. Just be sure to give the cycle plenty of time, and patience. One question...why would they be harvesting rock directly from the ocean when it's really pretty easy to replicate? Anyway, use a fresh shrimp from the grocery store, sit back and wait. Very exciting.
Good luck!!

yes should be fine only if there is nothing in the tank...
it might take a little longer for the cycle because there is probably going to be much die off from the rock if it is coming straight from ocean..or out of box.
no livestock till all levels are 0000
