i remember reading an article saying to dip for 30-45 minutes. i was shocked.

Black ich is treated with formalin baths, not a FW dip. Black ich spots are worms, not like white ich. The worms will not be effected by the short period of time spent in FW during a FW bath. That is also why black ich is not treated via hyposalinity. They can take a wide variety of fluctuations.
FW dips are stressful to the fish. They should not be performed as a precaution. They should be performed ONLY as a last resort. There are much better ways to treat ich. Only use it if your fish is destined to die before other treatments can take effect.

I think fw dips are stupid. Why do fish get ich? Low immune systems, Ich is present in every aquarium. DOnt you think fw dips stress a fish out further by netting him and all that other jazz? Yeah it may kill virus temporarily however it will come back. Food for thought

IMO, FW dips are not very useful for Ich and cause more stress to an already stressed fish.
I read somewhere that one of the stages of Ich can survive a 40-hour FW dip.
