yes they are born in freswater and sold as a freshwater species but throughout there life migrate to brackish water and my adulthood full saltwater. I have one close to that ( a figure 8 puffer) and hes in freshwater now ut when the eel tak goes up hell be acclimated to saltwater. actually to live a full life they MUST be in saltwater by adulthood.

Indeed it is a "freshwater" puffer. A leopard puffer to be exact.
They are brackish, meaning slightly salty water (think where a river flows into the ocean). You can acclimate them to be exclusively saltwater, and i've heard leopards are much better suited for salt only environments than their figure eight cousins. I've successfully kept both for many months, but the figure eight did eventually die.
To acclimate you'll need to follow similar procedures as a new saltwater fish. Slowly drip saltwater from their soon-to-be home to their current home for many, many hours. The longer this process takes, the more likely your fish will be to survive. I dripped mine for a total of 8 hours. Their colors will increase and be more vibrant and they'll become more active.

idk about compatibility but i have heard that when put in saltwater there average size will inchrease to around 4 or 5 inches

I would not put one with ANYTHING else that wasnt considered disposable. Mine randomly destroys a tankmate from time to time for no apparent reason.

My GSP, 4", has been at full marine for about a year now and is doing great.

the time a gsp lives in freshwater is minimal... so for the sake of argument.. by the time it gets to you.. it should be in brackish water.. 1.012 by the time its 6 months old to 8 months old it should be marine... and for the person that stated acclimate one from fresh to salt in a bucket dripping... only if you want to cause the fish a great deal of pain and a tuff slow death.. simply top off the water with saltwater.. as in evaporation... instead of toping off with fresh to maintain your salinity use saltwater... to raise it.. as in over a weeks to a months not one night.. .02 every week or 2 is an exceptable increase and wont bother them... my gsp's are about 7 months old and been in full marine at 1.024 for about 2 to 3 months now.. get along fine with others, and live with crabs and snails and dont bother them.. but tank mates are at your own risk.. great, healthy, funny, entertaining... just my thoughts on these fish.. but by no means in any way, shape, or form freshwater... they must have some degree of salt to maintain health! good luck!
