Fresh water?

I ve had fw tanks since i was little it just ive never had plants and i only did water changes like every 6 months.

i want some kind of sand so what kind should i get?

I've used all kinds of stuff as substrates. I pulled some dirt out of a creek and used it.
Last tank I set-up had playsand and gravel mixed - but I ended up doing a major water change every 3 months (I ran an UGF).
Good luck - planted tanks are fun and pretty!!

My tanks (salt and fresh) use playsand from Home depot (could be lowes or wall mart for that matter). Basically and especially for fresh any sand or gravel will do. I like the sand because the plants root better.
I do have a picture from months ago so will look that up.
