How long do you leave the fish in the fresh water before removing him?

I shoot for a minimum of 2 minutes. If the fish is ok, I go for up to 4 minutes. It is all dependent upon the individual fish.

Well the other day I purchased 2 Ocellaris Clown Fish and one has since kicked the bucket. Now the other seems to be sick as well. I heard that FW dips do the trick. It is a new system and all that was in there was the Live Rock. It was set up for a month and all the water parameters tested ok. I really don't see any white spots on the fins but he is breathing rapidly and his fins are being eaten away by something ich or some other disease. Please respond soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are your water parameters good? Enough O2 in the water? Were the fish acclimateted properly? I have done a freshwater dip only as a last resort and I left the fish in for 1 minute. The pH of the water and the temp needs to be the same as the main tank. I think their are much better treatments than the dip. Could you post a pic of your sick fish, maybe someone will reconize it's symptoms.

Unfortunately I don't have a cam. I am not new to the hobby but I am new to illnesses. Everything as far as the tank goes and the acclimation process were good to go. What are some other options I have besides FW dip obviously I don't want to use copper based meds.

I just went through something similar with a clownfish in QT...
Try the Disease Forum... We narrowed it down to "Clownfish" disease or Brookanella (sp) OR cyanide poisining...
For Brook the treatments ranged from FWD to Formalin Dips to Formalin QT treatment. Brook is different than and responds to Different treatment than Ick
If its Cyanide there's not much you can do...:(
Check with the disease guys though before proceeding...ID the problem and limit treatment to target problem.
By the way, mine died...:(

I think that I have narrowed to Brooklynella. The clown fish disease I just looked at the disease forum and that is what it looks like to me. Thanks for the help.

Just a thought if you are pretty sure the problem is ick. Try first feeding the sick fish food soaked in garlic extract. I make my own. I put one clove of garlic in a garlic press and squish it into a small tupperware container with maybe one quarter cup of tap water and let that soak a day. Then I take a square of frozen food and put it in another small container with a tablespoon of tap water and a few drops of the "garlic water" and let it soak a few hours before I then strain out the fish food and feed it to the fish. I had a three stripe damsel I used to cycle my tanks which ended up with ick and tail rot. I swear the stuff dissapeared over night once I fed him garlic soaked food:cool:

Hi, I used Kick Ick and really liked it, (it worked for me) but a lot of the people on the disease message board did not like it. They said it didn't work. I think the problem is they did not use it long enough....it says to use it for two weeks and it is ok to repeat the two week cycle of treatment. I used it for a whole month and it worked. If you only use it for two weeks the ick can come back even if the spots are gone because it can live in a cyst stage in the substrate for up to three weeks to a month. The Kick Ick and most other treatments only kill it in the swimming stage, not the cyst stage.
