freshwater disease in saltwater

Alright, well how about someone like me, who uses actual filter bags on my drains? These are heavy duty bags, as opposed to the thin ones you are referring to for carbon and phosphate remover. These bags are hard to come by in LFS' near me at times, and run $6 a piece. I have 6 of them and I have 2 drains. I normally throw them in the washing machine and put it on a low cycle with some bleach to get the dirt and debris off. What do you think I should do? I am very open to suggestions, as I try to be very careful with what goes into my tank.

well when i did use them i just rinsed them out under the tap and refilled them but you placing them in the was with a small amount of bleach isnt going to effect your tank that much(washer will dilute the chlorine drasticly)unless you have well water your tap will already have chlorine in it.not to mention those bags are made of nylon its not going to absorbed the same way as silicone does.bleaching is just unessesaryIMO unless you have had things like brooknylla or just as bad in your tank.you have to use your judgements as another person stated this is your tank i can only tell you how i do things and what has worked for me personally or have read or learned its your choice completely on how you decide to use information shared with you .its not mine nor anyone elses job to judge how you care for your fish or equipment .i go to alot of extremes in my tanks that most wont or cannot for one reason or another be it money time devotion or a non understanding spouse.I just happen to have a hubby that doesnt care what it cost as long as i keep them alive he will flip the bill.thats not bragging rights that just how he states it to me.also i have a larger selections of places to shop but what my LFS doesnt carry another might or it is special ordered for me.My lfs doesnt tell me what my fish need I tell them now.
there is an old saying if it aint broke dont fix it but if you know its going to break and can be effectively rectified before hand then by all means rectify it

A statement like that worries me a little bit. I do not want to do knowingly do anything to my tank that is affecting it at all - as opposed to "not that much".

The only reason that I bleach them is because my bags get pretty brown and dirty looking when I change them every few days. If water would get them clean looking, I would use just water, but it does not.

And I really do appreciate you commenting on this issue, regardless of the controvesey/argument that may take place among others possibly. I like learning things, and I am 100% positive that there is a lot out there that I do not know. I want to do what is best for my fish no matter what. I like to think that I am a conscientious aquarist.

unfortunatly there isnt alot commented about most of our discussion on the forums out side of the forums to know whether or not we are truly doing things the right way.but then again if we did things the right way, we wouldnt have aquariums to begin with in some minds at least.i think everyone here is conciensous in ther own way here on the forums .if we werent we wouldnt have a forum to begin with.clean looking isnt always the biggest thing to worry about at least to some.some of the healthiest tanks i have seen dont look that pretty but they are healthy.there is a big differnce between filth and growth.as l;ike you i love to learn i think that why i love this hobby so much its one of the few things in life you just cant get 100% of knowing. between my love of learning and my love of animal its pretty much the perfect combination for me as a hobby. i cant tell you for certain if it will of wil not effect your fish if its something you have been doing for some time and not seeing any ill effects from doing it then i see no reason to change it.but if in time your to notice things arent just right keep in mind all of the little things you do that could be a possible cause.if you feel that bleaching in the washer may end up to be harmful dip the net in white vinigar and rinse it off then you will know for sure then you will have done no harm(vinigar nutrilized bleach).hope that helps
just for those that dont know what the uses of white vinigar are heres a few examples:
(we do have alot of young poeple)
hair rinse to remove shampoo and conditioner residue.
vinigar is an all natural product no harmful chemicals whats so ever
removes algae and salt creep on glass tops
cleaning glass fronts to remove salt deposites
lime remover
calcium deposits in hot water heaters, coffee pots, ect
window washing
nutrilize bleaching action in case of bleach exposure(such as spilling bleach on jeans)
in wood bleaching (furniture) normal house hold bleach is used to whiten the wood using vinigar when the shade is what is desired stops the bleaching action from continuing.
floor wax remover
removes furniture polish
pickling foods
and personal care use
this is a very powerful natural cleaning product but completely non toxic and harmless if ingested or exposed to

When you say dip it in white vinegar, how long are we talking here? A few minute dip? Also, when you do a dip, how exactly do you yourself do it?
Again, thanks for all the feedback on this issue. I don't know if I am coming off as sounding argumentative, but I truly am not intending to. I am solely asking questions to learn alternative methods; methods that might be better overall for my tank. I am always open to new things.

oh my tank is thriving. I guess the gaosline is what fuels them. No I am dead serous. Some guy told me to do it and I thought he was insane but I looked at his tank and his reef was beautiful.
But I guess gasoline is bad?

Is that unleaded or diesel! I hope your fish don't smoke

Man first vodka and now gas. I have never heard of such things. I'm not saying it won't work since I have never tried either out and would be too scared to.
Anyway, back on the original topic. I have two fresh waters and 1 salt. I use three separate everything for all three tanks. Call me paranoid

You are either pulling us along with this joke or you really are serious. I am not sure which to believe.
I would have to think gasoline is very bad though...
