Freshwater filters for Saltwater?

I am a current fresh water fish hobbiest and I'm thinking about starting a fo salt tank. I have a 45 gallon which will be freed up soon ofr my latest experiment witha new hobby. My Question is, will a fresh water canister such as a fluval 304 be suffient for mechanical filtration and will it work in salt water. I was also planning on using live sand as the biofiltration. For live sand do I have to have anything under the sand to ensure that it performs well or is just the sand being stationary enough to work?
Any suggestions would be greatly apprceiated
Thanks, Phisherman

any type of cannister filtration is sufficient for a fish only saltwater tank. I'm really big on filtration so i would suggest adding another filter for supplementation. For a fish only a bio-wheel filter would be a nice addition.
Good luck!

Make the sand bed 4-6 inches. Use regular sand and seed it with the live sand. Unless you dont mind spending a lot of extra money.
