freshwater question

I'm really new to this nanoreef thing(2 weeks). but I had fresh tanks for years.
I've always been told and tell others, that ask, that you can as a rule of thumb keep 1" of fish per gallon. I personally never have crowded any tank to that number. Any remember that doesn't mean you can keep say a ten inch oscar or pacu in that tank.
guppies, tetras, mollies are great if you want color and a tranquil setting, my personal favs are tiger oscars and jack dempseys, they seem to have a more interactive personality. but look out their addictive and sooner than you know it you'll be investing in large homes for them.
Kinda sounds like the warnings I'm getting about this reef tank.

i love oscars, my brother has one that needs a new tank (we wont get into that) but they are full of personality. my brother taught his oscar to jump out of the water and grab food off his finger

its prety cool but i only have 500 a year to keep up my tanks so i cant afford a big fw ontop of my sw...

Chinese algae eater (octosomethingorother), Cardinals (way cooler than neons), and a m/f/f set of fancy guppies... Thats what I'd do if I just wanted a little community tank 10gal.
You should look into Cockatoo Cichlids. I loved breeding them when I was a kid. Good luck!
