I am not sure what is pricey...bare bottom is definitely cheaper as there is no sand involved at all. :notsure:
A refugium set up could be nothing more than a rubbermade sump, overflow and return pump - lots of DIY alternatives, and also uses less sand than a main tank. Certainly cheaper than buying a bunch of live sand...though yes, probably somewhat more than seeded sand but with many "pros" going for it down the road.

I have just never liked the look of a bare bottom. Unnatural. Takes some of the beauty out I think.

Well a bare bottom isnt going to cost alot but it dose look dull. No offense to the ppl that have one "I" just dont like it. If you did a DIY refugerium you may not be able to fit it under your tank. Then you still have to buy pumps "2" sand bed "6 inches" plants and or live rock and a light. Still gonna be kinda up there. Im a bargain shopper I would rather buy it all at once and try and save some money.

It would save lots of money lol. but wouldnt the reflectiveness of the bottom be kinda harmful to the fish? Would you have to paint it and kinda treat it like a QT "not treat with meds" just paint the bottom and stuff to cut down on the the reflective surface?
