I was told to give a bath of 3-5 minutes. It is safe as far as I know. I tried a 5 minute bath with a sick fish I had and he stayed belly up for the whole time. As soon as he went back into the salt water he was fine.

3-5 mins is about right. It does not always apply but a rule of thumb is that during the time, if a fish does not react to your presence then remove it immediately.

I didn't even know that you could put a salt fish in freshwater. This doesn't harm them if it is just for a short while? What is it supposed to cure?

it cures lots of parasites stuff living on the fish, things like that. The fish can take it but the pest burst.
