The staghorn hermit crab (manucomplanus varian), uses a living staghorn hydrocoral (janaria mirabilis) for its shell.
Ours is out all the time, stays on the sandbed and is continuously munching on detritus and leftover food the fish leave behind. We have never had any problems with it in our reef.
