my friends tank is a 40 long and he has 9 watts per gallon HQI with moon lights. he has a calcium reactor and 70lbs of live rock the tank has been running for 2 years now and all the corals where open an beautiful and now they are closed up and they are dieing one at a time. he feeds them marine snow 1 to 2 times per week. he has lps, sps, and softies. he has no fish in the tank and he has shrimp, hermits, and snails. we can not figure out what the problem is and he is very mad cause he has like 7 or 8 hundred dollars worth of coral in his tank. he also has a sump and a 20 gallon refugium for filtration. any advice or thoughts would be appriciated.

It would help if he fed them something they could actually eat. I believe Marine Snow is water with a small amount of dead phytoplankton.
That's probably only part of the problem though. To diagnose the real problem I'll need a LOT more information including water parameters, maintenance procedures, and a list of all equipment and additives being used.

Check the PH. Maybe just maybe there might be something wrong with the calcium reactor. You made it seem like it was a sudden change in coral heath. Have him run through all water parameters. Amm, nitrates, nitrites, ph, salinity(with a refracometer, not a 2 yr old hydrometer), temp(any temp swings), Check for electrical current. Hell just check everything. Good luck
