On my main tank I run the fuge light on a timer for about 12 hours a day. My frag tank fuge light is on most of the time -- almost always unless I remember to turn it off as it's not on a timer.
There are no real right or wrong photo times for it as you're just helping your macro algae grow I assume.
There are arguements for helping make a smaller pH swing by doing reverse of your tank lights but as long as your macro algae is growing I haven't seen a down side from doing it either way.

yeah everything i have read on it says it doesnt really matter. i suppose the amount of light would effect your energy bill

I have a Zeon puck style light for my sump/fuge that stays on 24/7. It has given me a nice start on the mangroves and have added them to my new stand. The new set up will have lights on a timer, so the sump/fuge light will be on with the moon lights of the tank.
