Fuge Plumbing Problem

So my lifereef overflow box finally arrived today and I am ready to set up my 10g fuge for my 29. However, I went to Home Depot today and couldnt' decide on what type of piping to use or what size. The fittings on both my pump and the overflow box and directly match any of the standard sizes. The fuge is to the right of my tank, roughly 2 1/2 feet lower than the top of my 29g. What sort of piping should I use for this, and how can I attach it to the pump and overflow box if they dont have direct sizes. Also, is it necessary to have check valves on either hose that I use. All advice welcome.

Should I put one on the return line or the line running from the overflow box down to the fuge?

The adapters are not threaded, however the overflow is ribbed. The size is roughly 3/4", the pump closer to a half. Is glue safe to use?? Im thinking thats the best solution if i can just glue a piece on there, I am just afraid that it will erode over time.
To answer your other post.....there's 2 sort of near me (15-20 min drive) that aren't too bad. Some things are priced well, but others (nass snails 4.99) are too expensive. I sort of shop around, dont really stick to one inparticular.
