I just saw an interesting post about using your old hang on filter for a small fuge.(good idea chandler)
My question is what do you put in it to get started? Do I need substrate and LR, or just LR and macro's?
And where do you get the macro's? Do they sell them on this site?

I just started a fuge a few weeks ago and all I have in mine are mangroves, nothing else. No substrate yet. I guess if you want magro algae then the substrate really depends on which macros you use. I will be using silt sand for the mangroves as soon as the roots develop more.

If you plan on using it for your 55 i believe you are wasting your time and effort. Although i know people that do this, it is only effective on a small tank of say 10 gallons.
A fuge should be 20 - 30% of your tank volume to be of any benefit.

I agree GreatfullReefer it would be way to small. But I thought it would be good to start off with until I can get something bigger.
My tank does not have an overflow, so I was going to use the old filter until I could buy one. And I wanted to do a fuge above my tank so I could increase my pod population and use gravity for the return.

I think it would be a good plan until you get an overflow. You wouldn't really need any substrate. I would just think some macro in there if you can get a light set up or just some LR and LR rubble to help the pod population.

Also I found this product called EcoSystem hangon back refugium. Is this any good or should I just build my own?

I like chaetomorpha the most. It doesn't go sexual.
I would just build your own and save the money till you make a good sized sump.

Well, are there any local places that do or some local person in your area that has some...local aquarium society?
I know an Aquatic place in Indiana that is Inland that sells it. SWF.com should get into this stuff as it doesn't go sexual.
