cycling is easy, you could probably ask at a nice lfs (not ***** or something) if you could get like a couple of there gravel from a FW tank they have to sit in your water. But you could always put a hardy fish in like a guppy or something to get it started. It's not very hard like saltwater.
ammonia is a big thing to check, ph is also. otherwise you don't need to be checking much like saltwater.
i usually vacuum the gravel of my main guppy tank about every month to get the detritus out from the gravel. my gravel is a few inches deep so you can see the crap..sorta a must do. you can buy a siphon gravel cleaner, there very nice for display FW tanks.
do water changes occasionally whenever you feel like it. Maby tri-weekly...or more. it's not a must do but fresh water is always a helpful thing.
another thing your gonna wanna look at is clean up, lots of people don't think about a clean up crew when it comes to FW but you should really.
ghost shrimp are good food scavengers but they need good water conditions. i would suggest a small piece of java moss (it grows fast in good lighting so you might have to sell some or just remove it). i would also suggest attractive or small snails. MTS snails are good for gravel moving like nassarius are good for sand moving. there like sw/fw cousins.
stay away from mystery snails/apple snails all those big snails that look the same but have 500 different names. (there the same thing). they need big tanks, make alot of crap, eat alot, and get the size of a freaking baseball or more...
freshwater clams/mussels...mussels, the small roundish ones, are ok and you can usually find those on a certain

type website that i'm sure you know what i'm talking about. but i prefer the larger clams. they can get sorta large but not too large. i keep them in my 5 gallon, and my 10 gallons. i am gonna keep some outside this year and try to breed them myself too (wish me luck). so thats another thing. clams also add natural look to the aquarium. and of course there filter feeders wich is the main reason i like to keep them in my display tanks. one time i had an algae bloom and added some mussels and the water was the clearest it had ever been in about 2 days.
