i have a diy 2L soda bottle filled with yeast and sugar, when the yeast eats at the glucose it produces co2, the co2 goes thru the airline tubing and into the powerhead.
i dont have a diffuser.. i should but dont lol
i will once i get a pressurized c02 system

Not mine but another local MAS members...

I think I'm going to do something similar with my next octopus tank. That dragons breath macro is awesome.

Yeah, it's primarily macro's although the picture quality sucks and you can't really see much besides the bright red dragons breath.
i would still go reef over planted though.
i like the planted fw tanks. they are like a reef in a sense but fw with plants. a piece of the fishes natural habitat in out home. to bad sw isnt as cheap..

A lot of the really nice macros require the same care as corals as far as dosing and lighting goes, but the payoff is that they grow a whole lot faster.
Not to mention, corals are more expensive and octopuses like to play with, horde, and sometimes destroy things, plus I can't keep a lot of corals I'd like to have with an octo since their skin isn't very protective.
It would literally be an "octopuses garden".

Nice! I couldn't remember the name of the substrate, that is why I didn't ask. I got it in once by mistake. It is wet in the bag and sort of looks like potting soil but with wood in there right?

yeah. im not sure if it has wood in it? maybe but its called eco-complete made by red sea? not sure on that one but its like the ls in a bag deal. it coms wet with a little bit of water in there. its supposed to come "packed with nutrients.." alot o people on a fw planted tank forum go nuts with dosing and using mineral packed substrates.. but i am kinda feeling my way into the planted tank area

That is so great! The other lights would be better. Remember that plants are photosynthetic. They need to have good lights to thrive. Keep us posted on this. Do you have thoughts about what fish will go in there? What sized tank is this?

its a 20 long.. what an awesommeee tank i have to say.
i have about ten cardinals, one red eye tetra, and a tiger tetra. (what a cool fish. ) i can get pics of fish if anyone would like..?
i have one of the tiger i can add. its like a sw goby almost minus the sifting..
for fish in the future..
i would love a discus and my lfs says the okay. but im almost positive it needs a larger tank.
i want 2 bolivian rams.. if you google them they are a beautiful fw fish
i have loved doing his planted tank though, i will admit that.
im 17 so im working on getting new stuff and upgrading.. but cant always affor what i need at the moment. so am going low tech on this for a biti just kiled some cash on a sump for my sw tank, and some other goodies.. new bulbs will come though and a cheap paintball style co2 system!

Just a word of advice I have kept many planted tanks. I currently have 2.
One time I thought I am going to do the ultimate planted tank. A 40 breeder. I had that same C02 set up ran through air stones. I got the AGA 110W pc light fixture for it. I had bosemani rainbows and silver tip tetras and a bristle nose plec
IT LOOKED FANTASTIC.............for about 3-4 months then the hair algae took the tank over and killed the plants. It was absolutely impossible to keep up. I removed the CO2 and cut back to every other day feedings. It was the light.
So now both my planted FW tanks use the simple 20w strips with 6400k bulbs. they do just fine!
Not saying it is impossible to do the high light great growth tanks. It will make the plants bushy and full. its just that such a tank will take more time out of your life than any reef.
just my experience.

Oh I love the Ram cichlids! Really the only thing that would bring me back to FW would be Rams. Or MAYBE Discus. I LOVE the German Blue Ram's though. I've never seen a Bolivian THAT colorful.
